UN Update: Pushing Back Against Attempts to Delegitimize Israel

Israel was a product of the United Nations, and yet a growing portion of that organization continues to question the very legitimacy of the state. Moreover, the UN has taken little action to condemn Hamas for weaponizing sexual violence, to ensure the immediate release of Hamas’ hostages and to hold Hamas accountable for war crimes. Hadassah National President Carol Ann Schwartz will have a conversation exploring this topic, including an update on Hadassah’s #EndTheSilence campaign, with Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan (invited).‍

One Book, One Hadassah Live at the National Conference for the First Time!

Speakers: Talia Carner and Lisa Hostein

Israeli-born master storyteller Talia Carner will be in conversation with Hadassah Magazine Executive Editor Lisa Hostein as they discuss Carner’s The Boy with the Star Tattoo, the July selection for Hadassah Magazine’s popular national book series. The historical epic weaves together the rescue of Holocaust-era Jewish orphans by Youth Aliyah with a daring military mission in the early days of the Jewish state. Carner, whose previous novel, The Third Daughter, was a National Jewish Book Award finalist, will also talk about her pro-Israel and women's rights advocacy and share her insights on writing a Zionist book in today’s publishing world.

Talia Carner, a proud seventh-generation sabra, is the New York-based author of several psychological suspense novels, including Puppet Child, China Doll, Jerusalem Maiden, Hotel Moscow, The Third Daughter and her latest, The Boy with the Star Tatoo. Formerly the publisher of Savvy Woman magazine and a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, Talia is a committed supporter of global human rights.
She is a board member of the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute, the Jewish women’s research center at Brandeis University, and an honorary board member of several anti-domestic violence, child abuse intervention and anti-sex trafficking organizations. In November 2023, The Algemeiner named her one of the "Top 100 People Positively Influencing Jewish Life." Talia is married to Ron Carner, former president of Maccabi USA. They live in New York and Florida and have four grown children.

Lisa Hostein joined Hadassah Magazine in late 2015, becoming the first female executive editor in the publication’s more than 100-year-plus history. Before that, she was editor in chief of JTA, the global Jewish news agency, for almost 15 years and executive editor of Philadelphia’s Jewish Exponent for eight. She has won numerous journalism awards from the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the American Jewish Press Association (AJPA), which also honored her with its Award for Distinguished Service to Jewish Journalism. The AJPA has also bestowed nearly 40 Rockower Awards for excellence in Jewish journalism on Hadassah Magazine under her leadership. Lisa lives in a suburb of Philadelphia with her husband and has two young adult sons.

Suzi places a strong emphasis on philanthropic contributions through the Fischmann Family Foundation, which focuses on education, providing scholarships and financial aid at various institutions. Suzi lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two children. In March 2019, she released her memoir, I’m Not Really A Waitress: How One Woman Took Over the Beauty Industry One Color at a Time.

How can universities guarantee the right of students and faculty to engage in peaceful protest while also ensuring that protests don't disrupt research and classes or contribute to a hostile learning and working environment?

As per The Jerusalem Post, “social media and the digital space are the prism through which the next generation views the world.” If that is the case, what are our future leaders learning? Hear from a co-chair of an Ivy League university’s task force on antisemitism.

David Schizer, JD is dean emeritus and Harvey R. Miller professor of law and economics at Columbia Law School. He served as dean from 2004 to 2014 and as CEO of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, a global Jewish humanitarian organization, from 2017 to 2019. David is the author of How to Save the World in Six (Not So Easy) Steps: Bringing Out the Best in Nonprofits. A co-chair of Columbia University's new task force on antisemitism, he is also a co-founder and co-chair of the Center for Israeli Legal Studies at Columbia Law School; co-founder and co-chair of the Richman Center for Law, Business and Public Policy; and a Charter Trustee of Ramaz. He served as a law clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the US Supreme Court and Judge Alex Kozinski on the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. HMO physicians and caregivers will speak about the new technology and innovative procedures used to save their lives. See how these brave survivors of the war have been rehabilitated at the new Gandel Rehabilitation Center at Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus. Hadassah hospitals have treated over 500 patients as a result of the events of October 7, including many of those with the most complicated and life-threatening injuries.

The experiences include:
• a photo opp with a special guest; or
• a coffee session with Prof. Yoram Weiss and/or Dalia Itzik; or
• an intimate meet-and-greet session with author Talia Carner. Please bring your copy of Carner's book, The Boy with the Star Tattoo, for her to sign.

The following individuals are ineligible to participate in this incentive: National Board members, National Assembly members, region presidents and those receiving subventions or other funding from Hadassah.

Winners will be notified of the experience s/he will receive by email no later than July 15, 2024. Hadassah will post on this website page (https://www.hadassah.org/vegas2024) when the first 75 fully paid and eligible registrations have been received. Winners will be notified by email at that time and will also be separately notified by email of the experience s/he will receive no later than July 15, 2024.
